Covid19 – Pfizer began testing vaccine in young children

Pfizer has begun testing its Covid-19 vaccine in children under 12, a significant step in turning back the pandemic. The trial’s first participants, a pair of 9-year-old twin girls, were immunized at Duke University in North Carolina.

Moderna also is beginning a trial of its vaccine in children six months to 12 years of age. Both companies have been testing their vaccines in children 12 and older, and expect those results in the next few weeks.

For the first phase of the trial, the company will identify the preferred dosing level for three age groups – between 6 months and 2 years old, 2 and 5 and from 5 through age 11. The kids will begin by receiving a 10 microgram dose of the vaccine before progressively moving to higher doses, Pfizer said. Participants also have the option to take 3 microgram doses. The Covid vaccine for adults requires two shots that contain 30 micrograms per dose.

During their original Phase 3 vaccine trial, Pfizer and BioNTech enrolled 2,259 children ages 12 to 15 years old. The companies are expected to release findings from that study soon.

Johnson & Johnson plans to test its single-shot vaccine in infants and even in newborns, after testing it first in older children.
